Winter Festival Will Be Held As Scheduled

Winterfest management has been able to make artificial snow at Elver Park throughout the winter, thereby stockpiling snow with the forethought that natural snow will have melted. The artificial snow will ensure that the events can be held despite unseasonably warm temperatures.

Organizer Q&A: The Winter Fest Fat Bike Race

How will the Fat Bike Race at the Madison Winter Festival work?

Anyone and everyone with a Fat Bike is encouraged to come out, no license is required. We have always made it a point that this is a fun race and if you take it too seriously you will be disqualified, – I think it’s one of the reasons it’s been so popular. We will award the top 3 men and women beer and cheese curds so the only thing we are serious about is getting the winners their winter fat on.

Winter Festival Relocating to Elver Park

The snowmaking effort at Elver Park is connected with plans to relocate the Madison Winter Festival from the Capitol Square to the west-side park in February.

Held each year since 2005, the festival would continue to feature cross country skiing, ice sculpture, sledding and other events without the need to truck snow downtown.

Snowmaking at Elver Park

Plans are quickly taking shape to make snow at Elver Park to provide a guaranteed venue for lessons, racing and outdoor winter recreation.

Snowmaking at the west-side park would begin as the weather allows, possibly by early December. The goal is to create a 1.5-kilometer loop of manmade snow running from the shelter building past the sledding hill and around the soccer fields. The trail would be open to anyone holding a valid Madison/Dane County parks ski pass, which costs adults $7 a day or $30 a year.
